Biographie d'Henri-Vincent Gillard
Chapitre 1
Henri-Vincent Gillard was born into a well-established farming family in Aigle, in the Swiss canton of Vaud, on January 9, 1902. His father, who died in 1914, was a herbalist who passed on his passion for the mountains to his young son, in particular during medicinal plant picking expeditions.
Following her husband's death, Henri-Vincent's energetic mother raised him, his sister Lydie and his older brother Ernest single-handedly. A gifted but not particularly zealous pupil, Henri-Vincent devoted his free time to intense sporting and artistic activities. At a very early age he developed a double passion for drawing and the violin. His teachers, detecting a real talent, tried in vain to persuade him to pursue advanced musical studies.
Chapitre 2
As a sound trade is one of the best preparations for life, Henri-Vincent began training as a surveyor at the Vevey School of Arts and Crafts. Meanwhile, he also attended courses in the painting department of the same school. It was then that he knew he would become a painter.
Keeping the promise he had made to his mother, Henri-Vincent finished his studies and received his surveying diploma at the age of twenty. Wishing to further his artistic training, he then attended the Académie Alexandre Mairet in Geneva until 1924. He started his professional life as a surveying technician for the City of Lausanne. Most of his spare time was devoted to the mountains and to painting.
Chapitre 3
Henri-Vincent Gillard a 30 ans.
In 1929, Henri-Vincent met the woman who was to become his wife. This new relationship and the economic difficulties of the time discouraged him, for a while, from giving everything up for painting. He nevertheless left the security of his municipal job to become self-employed. The recession quickly caught up with him and the venture ended in bankruptcy. Henri-Vincent Gillard was then 30 years old and decided thenceforth to devote himself entirely to his art.
This decision was accompanied by a withdrawal into himself. The artist shunned society, avoided private views and gave up competitions. He was only happy in his studio and out in nature, alone with himself.
Chapitre 4
Painting is not a well-paid profession, all the more so as Henri-Vincent painted neither to please nor to sell. The growing Gillard family, which had welcomed two sons, went through difficult times, facing an uncertain future.
Henri-Vincent Gillard held one exhibition before the war. During the conflict, he took up teaching to support his family and founded the “École nouvelle de dessin”. This activity also helped make his name known. Two wartime exhibitions confirmed this growing reputation. Several gallery owners offered to work with him, but the artist chose to remain independent.
Chapitre 5
The post-war years were kinder to the artist. An important exhibition was held in 1948. The critics were generous in their praise, particularly of the alpine landscapes. He then exhibited regularly, though without forcing the pace. Several opportunities to show his work beyond the borders of Vaud and Switzerland arose, but he turned them down. Henri-Vincent Gillard did not want to succumb to the sirens of commerce; in particular, he refused to send his paintings across the Atlantic.
The sixties were a period of fulfilment, but the artist kept a cool head and did not let himself be distracted from his powerful and original work.
Chapitre 6
As the years went by, Henri-Vincent Gillard had to give up the mountain climbing that had given him so much. He then drew his inspiration from long stays in his son Alexandre's chalet above Chamoson, in the canton of Valais.
His last exhibition took place in Lausanne in 1973. Although the critics were once again positive, Henri-Vincent Gillard was somewhat disappointed to find himself confined to the role, too narrow for his taste, of a painter of the Alps or of the mountains.
He painted almost to his last breath, on May 20, 1980.
